Friends of Emerald Beach

Friends of Emerald Beach
I'm happy to say that more and more people are taking a liking to Emerald Beach. Each time that I post on the beach a few more fans come out of the woodwork to offer any help that they can. One such person (seen here) came out to help me clear some of the driftwood away from the perimeters earlier this afternoon. His name is Darren Cotton and he's a student at UB. I found it interesting that Darren had never even seen the beach before, but after reading the recent BRO post he contacted me and asked how he could contribute.

When Darren and I met up, we immediately began to discuss the potential of the beach. Despite the furiously blowing chilly wind, we got to work and kept talking about plans. We decided to start a 'Friends of Emerald Beach' Facebook site in order to keep others informed as to the progress made. As we chucked the debris, a woman came strolling down to the beach to thank us for pitching in. She told us that she lives down on the water and the beach had become a daily destination for her and her family. She then volunteered to be on the newfound committee. Before we new it her mom and her daughter also volunteered. So there we were... about fifteen minutes into forming the group and we already had a family onboard (three generations).

Ultimately we decided that it would be fun to have a couple of get-togethers at the beach this summer. If you join the Facebook group, we'll let you know when. I also want to give kudos to The City for conducting the heavy workload at the beach. I understand that they spent some time hauling out the larger logs earlier in the season, which made our job today much easier. We still need to go back with a rake and clear off the smaller sticks - it would be good to have a fire pit somewhere down there, though I can't imagine it would be allowed. Next we're sitting down to discuss small measures that would help to improve the quality of the beach. If we can get a lot of public support for the beach, we can hopefully make more and more improvements.

Yesterday queenseyes, Darren, and I met up at Emerald Beach to do a beach sweep and discuss plans for upcoming gatherings as well as how to secure amenities. After a lot of raking, laughs, and talk, we came up with one of the first steps in making this... Read More

This was a good Memorial Day weekend for the city's Inner Harbor. There was lots to do and lots see. I was particularly impressed by the latest watercraft draws. It was the first chance that I had to visit the BFLO Harbor Kayak (and canoe and bike) ren... Read More

does the city have plans for debris removal at this location so that it's ready for the marina season which usually starts around this time...

this is a great spot with a ton of potential, let's hope there's enough of an appeal for this little 'paradise' to expand it a bit...my kids love it and that's good enough for me...

Dang, I wish I could've come out today. I will be there with some rakes hopefully later this week to held the clean-up effort. What a great asset to the waterfront community, this is truly becoming great location that has potential to grow. Our beautiful Queen City waterfront is looking much cleaner these days, I can't wait to get down there again with some friend and get closer to the fresh Lake Erie water. Cheers to Newell for sticking with it, and to Darren for taking interest as well!

I like the idea of a fire pit. What if this new group (which I intend on joining) convinced the city to allow a big event at the beach with a **large** bonfire. Once a significant portion of the beach is cleared, something like a "Buffalo Summer Beach Party" could happen on a random summer Saturday. During the day there would be BBQs, beach sports, etc and people would come and collect driftwood from the further edges of the beach - bringing it to a central location that would be the site a huge (but BFD controlled) bonfire that night. Could become a regular occurrence if the City supports it, would eventually get a lot of people down to the beach to raise awareness, and could also aid in the expansion of the beach...

just a thought

Our thoughts exactly. There's also been talks about extending a wooden walkway above the beach all along the perimeter and capped of by a large patio built over the stone pier. Perhaps a nice open air venue for local artists to play during said Beach Party?

I really like the ideas a lot! What I have learned, is if you have enough support for something it's easier to get support from The City. If you have a couple people rallying around an effort it's much harder. That's why it's so important that we get people signing up on FB. Maybe we could get the rest of that boardwalk built. Can't wait to get back over there now that the wind has died down. Oh, and I hope that Emerald Beach becomes a big destination for cyclists - group rides to the beach would be fun.

Bon Fire on the lake would be a huge draw... and a lot of fun and a good way to clear out the yearly supply of drift wood.

Then again anyone with a wood furnace in their house could get a good winters supply of heat out of some of that wood. And it would be an even more environmentally friendly way to dispose of the free supply of fuel.
