Fera's Electric Tower Café

Fera’s Electric Tower Café
Sometimes one of the saddest aspects of seeing a building renovated is knowing that the general public can not participate first hand in the transformation. Of course we can all look up and see a beautiful building standing in its glory, but what about the inside? Other than seeing photos, what are the chances that someone can gain access if it were not for occasional tours? When there was a ribbon cutting for The Electric Tower, I was fortunate enough to get a good look at the stunning interior. The office building was everything that it should be - elegant, inspiring... simply awesome. What were the chances that I would be able to walk inside on a regular basis? It turns out that those chances are pretty good.

Fera's, a downtown lunchtime institution, has opened in the Washington/ East Huron corner of the building (see back story). That means that we all get to enjoy the brilliant makeover! When we stopped in for lunch today it was standing room only. Not to say that it is that busy everyday, though the people that we spoke to say that the reception has been tremendous. These days, downtowners have plenty of options when it comes to great food located in inspiring buildings. I really hope that the Electric Tower management follows the same recipe when it comes to the rest of the street level commercial storefronts.

I walked around the building and looked at the rest of the potential and all I can say is, 'Wow'. I have a feeling that lunch-goers are going to be coming from far and wide to grab a bite at this location. Subs, salads, wraps, melts, soups, sandwiches... Fera's even serves light breakfast foods and coffee from 7am to 10:30am. Lunch service ends at 3pm, so that gives people plenty of time to relax in style and comfort.

If you're taking any architectural tours of the city, you must add the Electric Tower to your list... right around lunchtime!

That's one Buffaloism that has always confused me; restaurants and bars with both the owner's name and another name. You know, names like Salvatore's Italian Gardens, Dino's Bocce Club Pizzeria, Bob and John's La Hacienda, Vince's Village Grille, Tony Rome's Globe Hotel, and so on. It's a naming trend that died out in the rest of the country decades ago. It's quaint, but confusing. If I'm telling someone to meet me there, am I supposed to call it "Fera's", "The Electric Tower Cafe", "Fera's Electric", or something else?

It's good to have another place to eat downtown, though.

You need to travel more, this is all over the place, and not worth complaining about.

I can't wait to try this place

You left out a lot of the other restaurants with this Buffaloism such as: Ruth's Chris Steak House, PF Chang's China Bistro, Col Sander's Kentucky Fried Chicken, Charlie's Grilled Subs (over 300 locations),Papa John's Pizza, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Abuelo's Mexican Food Embasy, Carabba's Italian Grill, Flrming's Prime Steakhouse, and of course who can forget Popeye's Fried Chicken.

Sally, many of the names you mentioned are just possessive names, like "Papa John's Pizza", "Popeye's Fried Chicken", and "Charlie's Grilled Subs". Those names are no different in form than simple possessive names "Ted's Hot Dogs" or "Anderson's Custard". If it was a really old-school Buffalo style-name combining possessive and non-possessive names, it would be something like "Papa John's Sicilian Delight Pizza" or "Popeye's Riverview Fried Chicken", and you're left scratching your head: "Is it Papa John's, or is it Sicilian Delight?" "Is it Popeye's, or is it Riverview?"

There's never been a KFC called "Colonel Sander's Kentucky Friend Chicken", just like there's never been a "Ray Crock's McDonald's Hamburgers", "Tom Monaghan's Domino's Pizza" or "Dave Thomas's Wendy's Hamburgers".

In places where they're located (everywhere but Buffalo, naturally), it's "Ruth's Chris" "P.F. Chang's", "Macaroni Grill", and "Fleming's". There's national advertising to back up the popular name. In Buffalo, it's a mystery as to why people generally say "Anchor Bar" and not "Frank and Theresa's", or "Bocce Club" but not "Dino's"; but generally say "Bob and John's" and not "La Hacienda", or "Salvatore's" but not "Italian Gardens". With new restaurants and bars with the combo possessive/non-possessive name, it can be even more confusing; there's no decades-long tradition of what to call the place.

What's also strange is that it's mainly the Italian places in Buffalo that have such nomenclature; "Frank's Sunny Italy", "Salvatore's Italian Gardens", "Frank and Teresa's Anchor Bar", and so on. It's not like there's "Stash and Stellas's Polish Villa".

Just an observation about a Buffaloism, that's all.

I guess Forgotten Buffalo is stupid for making the same observation a few years ago.

I think what's "stupid" is that you think it's exclusive to Buffalo. If you travel you will see this everywhere.

Well for this instance it makes sense considering there are or were two other Fera's downtown.. So adding in the location of this particular Fera's makes sense.

Now if someone would just step up and fill the void that they made when they moved from the Market Arcade.

Excellent, yet another Eatery/Cafe in downtown. Love this building as well, especially when illuminated at night.

Hate to point this out, but it's not new it just moved.

Oh, I didn't read the previous story and I never venture to the Market Arcade. This new location is closer proximity to me so I will give it a try..
