Buffalo Steak & Sub To Open On Main

Buffalo Steak & Sub To Open On Main
If I didn't know any better (from looking at this photo), I would think that this was on Chippewa. The facade is reminiscent of the Salsarita's storefront, or Papaya's.  That's why I was so stunned to see it opening up on Main Street next to the Packard Building. The design of this steak and sub shop takes the sting out of many of the other squandered facades on the street. Actually, as of late, we've seen quite a few buildings updated and reused the way they were meant to be.

As far as the eatery goes, I have a feeling that this type of addition to this area will do well. First of all, it looks nice. They obviously sank some money into the improvements - hopefully the quality of the food will match. "It's going got be steak hoagies subs, fingers, etc.," owner Patrick Rine told me. "We once had a place at the corner of Delaware and North during the mid 80's-early 90's called Barbarino's. We realized that we had people who wanted to be back in the business. And if you think about it, it's sort of unfair that none of the Buffalo businesses want to travel east of Elmwood. It's sort of disappointing in a way. It's like we were back in the 1940's. We wanted to make an impact on the street. It's refreshing to see more and more boards coming off the windows on Main Street.

"We're looking into possibly putting in loft apartments above the business. I'm a big proponent of free markets - tax credits is not my idea of development. There's an opportunity to do high end lofts to bring people back into the city. We already own some college housing in the neighborhood. If you supply decent housing, people will come. We bought three abandoned places at Delavan and Lindwood - one of the houses was scheduled to be torn down. Now we're about to rent them out. I think The City almost has it right. But The City should not be hiring more police officers - they should be hiring more building inspectors... and that's coming from a former police officer. Get decent apartments into these neighborhoods and people will move in. In a strong neighborhood, the people help to police themselves."

Buffalo Steak and Sub will be opening at the end of June.

After watching the awning go up and the doors open at Buffalo Steak & Sub, I finally decided to head in and grab a sub. I was immediately impressed with the layout of the interior - it was a hybrid between a Jim's Steakout and Elmwood Taco & Su... Read More

Midtown Main st looks a lot nicer these days. Great to see another business start up. Looks great next to the improved packard building.

wow. normally i wouldn't like a big sign like that... but I feel an exception must be made. Main Street needs something that screams development, businesses and something more than the vacant appearance it has had in the past. Otherwise people just won't notice you.

Lit signs aren't appropriate for this section of Main St. Find a sign or a hoagie made by Frank Lloyd Wright and EVERYONE WILL LOVE IT ON BRO.

I give the developer credit for his strong belief in the market, but I would never invest in his property. If there are incentives that would improve your bottom line and increase the likelihood of profitability, why would you not utilize these tools?

The sign is really nice, and adds a boom to the building. I do wish that something like this would open up on Main Street downtown, but this is a start.

I knew people would mention the sign.

It's not a gawd-awful bubble awning. It's not a cheap box sign. Its not a sign that is crudely handpainted by the same "artist" who makes signs for East Side delis and West Side bodegas. The logo doesn't use Buffalo's favorite typeface, Brush Script, or the cliche of natural/ethnic/wellness-related businesses, Papyrus. It's not large; there are signs on pedestrian-priented sections of Hertel Avenue and Main Street in University Heights that dwarf this, considering the tenant frontage.

It's a decent wall sign, IMHO. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they don't roll out a portable onto the sidewalk.

Great job by the building's owner. I'm sure this is a viable business for this area--witness the business levels of McD's, BK and Delta Sonic. Nice to see the owner did it nicely. I also wondered who had rehabbed the homes on Delavan @ Linwood. Oustanding job on those, too. Thank you and congratulations Mr. Rine.

btw: Packard's ribbon cutting is June 3. BRO should do an updated story on those units (they're surprisingly nice).

Nice! As long as it's not another unbelievably over rated place like Jim's Steakout I'm good.

Honestly do some of you get paid to complain or do you just feel empowered by doing it?

lets hope there is no grease spillage in the streets!

Ironically, I don't see any real complaining about the sign. Just one joke (spilled_milk's).

I think this sign is fine and hopefully an indication that the Preservation Board is becoming less business-hostile. Not long ago, the PB prevented a Main St. pizza shop a few blocks away from having an awning type sign.

Read the posts again whatever.
There are complaints about the sign, grease spilling, too many sub shops and not using tax payers money to do the project.

Which comment complains about the sign? Among all the comments, I see only one which could be interpreted that way - spilled_milk's "complaint" which looks like he or she was totally joking (sign made by Frank Lloyd Wright?), not seriously complaining.

The grease spilling remark also looks like a joke. Dan endorsed the sign, as does sbrof, buff4life, and me. And others above complimented the sub shop too.

And nick's tax discussion looks like he was putting in a plug for the possibility of historic tax credits - one of his favorite public policies. While I disagree with nick's comment above, it doesn't look like he was complaining about the sub shop in the least.

i don't see the issue with the sign.......however i am not one hundred percent behind the business idea. given the area i think they need to have a rider variety of food, not just a sub place for drunks, there aren't enough bars near by. jim's steakouts are near bar areas usually or at least more densely populated areas of young people. i think that maybe this business would work closer to canisus so that students could walk there but this location will be easy to pass by. it offers nothing unique to the area which i think that area needs, main st needs to have its own identity not make an attempt at being elmwood
