Buffalo School Board Election Update

Buffalo School Board Election Update
In case you missed it, there was an important election today.  8 candidates ran for 3 at-large seats on the Buffalo School Board.  The election has been cast by some as a referendum on Superintendent James Williams by the Buffalo News and it has sparked debate in virtually every media outlet in town.

The Erie County Board of Elections has updated results on their website and here is the latest:

With 105 districts out of 105 reports (presumably this means all the votes have been counted), the three leading vote-getters are. . .

John Licata - 4,961
Chris Jacobs - 4,239
Bryon McIntyre - 3,831

Two other incumbents - Florence Johnson and Catherine Collins - backed by the Buffalo Niagara Partnership and largely considered supportive of the Superintendent, appear to have lost their seats.

Well yahoo to Licata and McIntire! To Collins and Johnson "please don't let the screen door hit you on your way out!" To Jacobs, maybe you can come around and see that Stuperintendent Williams is destroying what good was left of the Buffalo Public Schools.

Given the close vote counts for Collins and Johnson, absentee ballots could swing either into McIntyre's place -- Collins is only 41 votes behind McIntyre right now.

Regardless of what happens on the board...or with Williams...it is next to impossible to fix the schools.

The reason is there are not elections to ban stupid people from having kids and sending them to public schools.

There are not elections on what should be done with the teachers union.

Bad parents, for various reasons, with bad kids for multiple reasons and the teachers union are the two things that are causing the problem and the two things that most likely will never change.

Good news for property values in the burbs!

This was more an election against someone than for someone. I had to cast my votes against Jacobs, FloJo and the Dr. Now maybe Collins can get back to medicine and help someone. Oh wait, that's right she's an Ed.d. A garbage degree. I believe my dog has an Ed.d. from the AKC.

I am thrilled that BRO and its readers took such an interest in this election. I have always and will continue to insist that one of the biggest barriers to repopulating the city with middle class families is the issue of the public schools. If a family does not have children who all qualify (1. near perfect behavior,2. above average intelligence, 3. no special needs. and 4. great study habits) for attendance in charter schools or afford private schools, the prospect of living in the city is a big negative.

It's all very simple. When the cream of the crop attend other institutions within the city, what student population does that leave in the public schools? All the very challenging ones. This is not an appealing proposition for families.

It is this population the the school board must address, so it is critical that we elect the very best. The turnout may only be 5%, but these voters know the importance of the issue.

You make a strong case for abolishing public education.
