We told you some time ago that Jason Schwinger, man-about-town and sometimes BR contributor was going to start a kayak and bike rental company, and sure as a deadline, he'll open on May 15th.
If you're
looking to do something outside other than yard work now that the weather has
broken, Jason has a cure for you. Stop down to BFLO Harbor Kayak, located at
downtown's new Commercial Slip, for a waterfront kayak or bicycle
adventure. (Note: the acoustics
between the silos make for great singing, so bring someone you can harmonize
with.)
BFLO Harbor
Kayak has the distinction of being the first recreational
amenity at the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation's newly developed
waterfront. Not only will you be able to rent
bicycles and easy-to-paddle,
sit-on-top single and tandem kayaks, but BFLO HK will also offer weekend
morning kayak tours and paddling instruction classes. Hours of operation, tour and class
schedules will be posted on the BFLO Harbor Kayak website.
BFLO Harbor
Kayak anticipates a busy season and is already looking to expand their fleet of
kayaks, so Jason is looking for individuals or businesses to donate or sponsor
stable touring or river kayaks. As
thanks for your contribution, you will be compensated with a 'lifetime pass'
for free bike and boat usage, a BFLO Harbor Kayak t-shirt, tickets to an
upcoming public event at the Wharf, and your name or business's name and logo
laminated on the kayak. To inquire about kayak donation, sponsorship, or
additional promotional opportunities, email Jason at Info@BFLOHarborKayak.com.
The more we
think about this...if we were to buy a kayak and give it to Jason, we'd never
have to store or lift it; we'd just get in and go...
You'll find
Jason and his fleet of colorful kayaks docked at the Central Wharf next to the
Naval Museum and the much-anticipated Spirit of Buffalo schooner. Equally suited for both seasoned kayakers and new
paddlers, the location on the Commercial Slip is a protected waterway, ideal
for a peaceful trip down the Buffalo River or out toward the break wall and
into the marina. (Very fun, and more athletic depending on the day.) Even better, a percentage of the boat
rental fee will go to support Buffalo Urban Outdoor Education Foundation.
In a
partnership with Green Options Buffalo, BFLO Harbor Kayak will rent out a fleet
of green (both literally and environmentally) cruiser bicycles by
the hour or day to explore the bike paths South to the NFTA Boat Harbor, Dug's
Dive, or Times Beach - or north up the path to the Hatch at the Erie Basin
Marina, or even to North Tonawanda and beyond...
Jason said he
couldn't have done this without the help of some local partners that made it
all possible: BUOE, GOBuffalo, Nickel
City Graphics, ECHDC, Buffalo Place,
Erie Basin Marina, and the City of Buffalo.
See you May
15th at the harbor!

Very cool. This is something that both locals and tourists can get into. The best way I traveled around Paris was by renting a bike. So much cheaper and convenient than anything else.
He should put up fliers in the youth hostel. being able to come to buffalo, grab a bike and travel around town would be quite convenient for younger travelers. Great idea!
