Awnings Cap Buehl Block Comeback

Awnings Cap Buehl Block Comeback

One of the neatest renovation projects downtown is sporting new awnings.  The 1875 Buehl Block building at the corner of Broadway and Ellicott Street was recently fitted with the maroon exclamation points.  The Second Empire style brick building received a top-to-bottom renovation by Roger Trettel and contains a mix of commercial and residential space.  It opened in early-2007.

The mansard-roofed building, featured in the 1930 Charles E. Burchfield painting "Rainy Night," is the home of 2nd Cup Café and contains five rental apartments on the upper floors.  One unit, filling the entire 2,300 sq.ft. second floor with three bedrooms and two baths, has 14 ft. ceilings and windows overlooking Lafayette Square and the cental library.

The remaining four units are two-bedroom, two-bath, two-level units that occupy the third and fourth floors.  Each have great city views and unique floor plans.

Trettel also renovated the adjacent, two-story 285 Ellicott Street building that is occupied by the local offices of Tetra Tech, Inc., an international consulting and engineering firm focusing on natural resources and infrastructure.  285 Ellicott received a bold new color scheme and new windows.  The remodeled interior space has a loft-like feel.  Hardwood flooring in the lobby was purchased from Buffalo ReUse and refinished (below).

Trettel is one of several small or first-time developers who are incrementally transforming downtown Buffalo. The small projects make a big difference.  They demonstrate that "things are happening," and with vision, great things are possible.

rehab looks great. Loving all the small knew rehabs taking place downtown. Hopefully someday we can extend the look of a beautiful building like this further down a block instead of just continuing on with a bunch of 1-2 story buildings.

looks fantastic! That last image should have an after image... don't want to end the article on a negative note.

Damn nice awnings. I love the old style awnings. They look so much better than the vinyl bubble awnings.

I personally prefer the Cheektowaga/Sloan aluminum awnings. They are delightful.

Just in 'The 2nd Cup' for some lunch today and I love the open floor space of this cafe. The transformation of this building is incredible; you can't get this kind of look and feel in the burbs. I would hope all five rentals get new tenants faily quickly judging from the kitchen interior photo. Note sure if 'The 2nd Cup' has the print of Charles E. Burchfield 'Rainy Night' painting but it would be great addtion to some of the other art on the expansive wall space in the main dining/sitting area.

Kat is a great hostess. Many thanks to her for hosting my exhibit last month. A few of my photos will remain on display for a short time in her dining area.

The awnings are a handsome addition to the facade and add to the ambiance of this historic building. *CLASSY*

Nice. Awnings really spruce up a place. Now if Main St near Allen can get a few going (I know you can do it Dan!). Even a nice sign for the pawnshop makes this look better.

Nice touch, Roger. Can't wait to try out the cafe. Any evenings hours? How about restoring the cornice next?
