One of the neatest renovation projects downtown is sporting new awnings. The 1875 Buehl Block building at the corner of Broadway and Ellicott Street was recently fitted with the maroon exclamation points. The Second Empire style brick building received a top-to-bottom renovation by Roger Trettel and contains a mix of commercial and residential space. It opened in early-2007.

The mansard-roofed building, featured in the 1930 Charles E. Burchfield painting "Rainy Night," is the home of 2nd Cup Café and contains five rental apartments on the upper floors. One unit, filling the entire 2,300 sq.ft. second floor with three bedrooms and two baths, has 14 ft. ceilings and windows overlooking Lafayette Square and the cental library.

The remaining four units are two-bedroom, two-bath, two-level units that occupy the third and fourth floors. Each have great city views and unique floor plans.

Trettel also renovated the adjacent, two-story 285 Ellicott Street building that is occupied by the local offices of Tetra Tech, Inc., an international consulting and engineering firm focusing on natural resources and infrastructure. 285 Ellicott received a bold new color scheme and new windows. The remodeled interior space has a loft-like feel. Hardwood flooring in the lobby was purchased from Buffalo ReUse and refinished (below).

Trettel is one of several small or first-time developers who are incrementally transforming downtown Buffalo. The small projects make a big difference. They demonstrate that "things are happening," and with vision, great things are possible.
