Volunteerpalooza Event at WNED TV Studios

Volunteerpalooza Event at WNED TV Studios
It's called Volunteerpalooza and it took place this past Saturday at the WNED-TV studios in downtown Buffalo. What a wonderful way to find out about organizations that make a difference in our community - this is where people find out how to get involved in a volunteer capacity. Also, for career changers, what an incredible networking opportunity, both at the event, and in your chosen volunteer path. There truly was something for everyone there.

With 50 some organizations presenting, space does not permit me to tell you about all of them, but I will tell you about a few of them. But if you missed the event and would like to volunteer for one of the organizations, just click on the link and you should be able to find the information on how to get connected in the world of volunteering.

In my life I have personally witnessed the incredible job the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care does for people that are nearing death - the support for their families is incredible. Hospice seems to have a different special event every month of the year.

If you like to see rock concerts, comedy and Broadway shows featured at the Shea's Performing Arts Center (right here on Main St. in the Theater District downtown), there are volunteer opportunities. Please contact Bobbi Scott at rscott@sheas.org, or phone Clyde Terry at 716.883.1577.

Buffalo In Bloom's map of its ever-growing floral participants

I just love how Buffalo in Bloom is trying to beautify Buffalo in all ways floral. Sign up as a digital photographer and capture beautiful gardens in your neighborhoods - it's as easy as taking pictures and submitting them to Buffalo in Bloom. The Garden folks are then encouraged to approve the images of their gardens added to the website (broken down by the neighborhood that they live in). Before long everybody in your neighborhood wants in, and nobody wants to be left behind. And every year Buffalo becomes even more beautiful!

Speaking of neighborhood revitalization, Buffalo ReUse always needs volunteers to deconstruct houses, thus preserving their timeless architectural elements rather than destroying them. Buffalo certainly has some of the most unique architecture in all of the United States. The commercial warehouse, known as ReSource, is a gold mine of hard-to-find replacements for those architectural treasures you might need to fix up your home.

Many more volunteers are needed for the March of Dimes event called the March for Babies which is coming up on Sunday April 26 at Delaware Park in North Buffalo. This event is designed to help kids 6 to 15 years old learn self-discipline, respect for others, honesty, hard work, conflict resolution and physical fitness. Or you can volunteer for SumoKids --- coaches, assistants and support are needed for these Sumo-related activities that help keep kids active. If you see a purple ribbon pinned on someone's lapel then you've identified a plea to stop domestic violence (brought to you by Crisis Services). Finally, many event volunteers, museum greeters and administrative assistants are needed at the new LEED Certified Burchfield Penney Art Center on the Buffalo State campus.

What an huge offering of organizations for this annual event! If you know a Buffalonian, then chances are that you know someone who already volunteers. This climate thrives on the volunteer efforts of so many people who want to give back to the city and its people. Be sure to look for this event next year, and in the meantime you can keep your ears open for volunteer opportunities that present themselves throughout the year. Trust me... you can make a big difference.
