Buffalo A Possibility For Future USA World Cup!

Buffalo A Possibility For Future USA World Cup!
Well, Buffalo and 69 other cities.  But still!  Each of the 70 selected cities has until April 17 to submit bids for the 2018 or 2022 USA World Cup tournaments.  USA officials believe that Europe will most likely be awarded the 2018 World Cup, and that 2022 is a more realistic estimate for the World Cup.

Bids for the tournament are restricted to general continental or large geographic areas.  2010 is being held in South Africa, and 2014 in Brazil.  Due to a newly adopted rotational policy, bids for 2018 and 2022 can only come from North America, Asia, Europe or Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, and other islands in the Pacific ocean).  If one of those continents wins 2018, they will be excluded from the 2022 selection process.

Buffalo has already proven themselves to be a great venue for international tournaments, as our HSBC Arena will play host to the 2011 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.  If Buffalo officials make the bid, the FIFA selection committee will hopefully take into account that another international committee found Buffalo to be a suitable town for a gigantic sports tournament.  While it can be argued that ours is a hockey town over soccer, having ample lodging, restaurants, and attractions make Buffalo an enticing city.

What about the fear is that the Bills might move by then?  While a realistic obstacle, let's pray to the NFL gods that Ralph Wilson Stadium will still be in operation.

If my memory serves me, we made an attempt to be one of the sites for the '94 WC. I believe our bid was based on the proximity to Canada. They chose Detroit instead. Does anyone else have details?

Wouldn't that involve making a GINORMOUS SOCCER STADIUM SOMEWHERE? Is the Ralph sufficient?

We should split it with Toronto and offer to host the games. That way it raises our chances. We can build some high speed rail in the meantime in between us maybe lol.

Not to burst your bubble, but as most people have noticed on the "official site" they did not pick Buffalo or any city for that matter, they listed pretty much evey large venue in the country.

Who really knows what their criteria might be for choosing a site but we have more than enough to pick from for venues. assuming the field area at the ralph is big enough, the stadium would far surpass the size of most of the sites games were played at in germany for the past world cup. at least a few of the stadiums were in the 30,000 seating range, and i believe one was even in the 20,000 range. (may have to check my facts on that, been awhile, but i know several were pretty "intimate" in size)

the standard pitch size is (90m-120m) lenght (50m-90m) width, and FIFA recommended size (100-110) l. (60-75) w.

0 chance we would get an event of this magnitude but interesting to think about

I am starting, right now, to hold my breath! This gives UB plenty of time to build a world class soccer program rivals of NCAA Champs like UNC, etc... A brand new state of the art stadium downtown (as Ralph will be crumbling by this time), on the water, 18+ high rise hotels to accommodate the visiting hoodlums, beefed up border security, plenty of duct tape to cover the windows and doors for the weekend, a new airport, high speed rail, a new jail another truly international airport...

But it will make for one heck of a weekend!

Thanks for the laugfh at reading this article. Auberner's response puts it best. Buffalo is not, and never will be a finalist for an even t like this. Stick to the world hockey championships. That is about as good as it gets for Buffalo hosting a sporting event. What a joke.

Really, Buffalo should pull out now before going through the embarrassment of listing both hotels and the anchor bar.
