Ralph Wilson, 90 years old, and Alive

Ralph Wilson, 90 years old, and Alive
Update: Since we've received over 1,300 visitors in the past 48 hours searching for 'Ralph Wilson dies' and related terms, we thought we'd update this post confirming Mr. Wilson is still alive.

The Buffalo rumor mill was running full throttle on Friday night as rumors of Ralph Wilson's death spread across the region.  Using the best new medium to track breaking news - Twitter - we asked if others had heard the same rumor and could actually confirm the veracity of the claim.

From a reporter at the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle with the Twitter handle @nrusso came this response: @BuffaloRising i work at the rochester paper. we confirmed he is alive and laughing about this.  She followed up with this: sounds like Ralph is alive and well. Channel 2 in Buffalo called his house and he answered :)

And from a desk reporter at CNN with the handle @GLBcnn came this follow-up:
@BuffaloRising rumors at the moment..   He followed up moments later: The Buffalo Bills tell CNN "it's a false rumor" with regards to rumors of Ralph Wilson's death.

And from a Buffalo News article:

The Buffalo News got calls from people at the Sabres-Maple Leafs game in HSBC Arena, a local bar, a golf dome and from reporters as far away as the West Coast. Even Wilson's Wikipedia page had been changed.

Subsequent calls to people close to the 90-year-old Wilson, who was recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, quickly proved the claim was baseless.

Perhaps the fact Wilson had suffered a shoulder injury recently fueled the rumors. He did have to make a trip to the hospital Friday to have the shoulder checked out. But Wilson was fine. No mainstream media ran with the rumor Friday night.

The Bills sent out a Twitter alert this afternoon refuting the claim.

"There is absolutely no truth to the internet rumor referencing Ralph Wilson's health," the Bills' official Twitter page reads.

It's unclear how this rumor started, though some speculate it was mischievous Toronto fans who started the rumor at the HSBC Arena as the Sabres dismantled the Leafs.

Still fogging the mirror? Still managing to keep that up?

A close friend who is a paramedic tells me it's true. Right now that holds a bit more credibility than BR. RIP Ralph.

HereWeGo - still sticking by the claims of your "friend" who is a "paramedic" or did you want to apologize?

I did hear something about Pitts trying to secure a large lot of land on Abbott rd., so he could build a Wingate Hotel. I head he wanted that land, 'at any cost'.

So, it occurred to no one at BRO to go right to the source and call Mr. Wilson themselves? I guess that is too close to real journalism for BRO's taste.

Silly suggestion, Lorem. For one thing, it's very unlikely BR has Mr. Wilson's unlisted home phone number.

For the most part, BR handled this very responsibly but with one exception: they didn't delete HereWeGo's idiotic comment from 3/28 12:34am as soon as they saw it. Leaving that there might have added to the rumor continuing to spread for a while because web searches for people looking to check on the rumor would lead them to this page.

I'm not saying that HereWeGo doesn't deserve the public embarassment of having what he wrote left there to show he has no credibility, but I think the greater good would've been to delete it as soon as possible.

I'd never delete a comment due to it expressing an unpopular opinion, or even a vile opinion, but something as big a factual lie as what HereWeGo posted does deserve deletion.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Lou Saban, the well-traveled coach whose NFL and college careers spanned five decades and dozens of jobs, has died. He was 87.

Saban died around 4 a.m. Sunday at his home, his wife, Joyce, said. He had heart problems for years and recently suffered a fall that required hospitalization, she said.

Saban played football at Indiana University and for the Cleveland Browns of the NFL before embarking on an unmatched head coaching career that included stops with the Boston Patriots of the AFL, the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, along with college jobs at Miami, Army, Northwestern and Maryland.

He also was president of the New York Yankees from 1981-82 and coached high school football from 1987-89.

I could care less about the rumors of Ralph Wilson's death. I'll wait until that actually happens before reacting. I am sad by Lou Saban's death, he was a great man and a great coach. Rest in peace.
