"Hey, you guys!": The Goonies @ Shea's

“Hey, you guys!”: The Goonies @ Shea’s

For nearly 20 years now, Shea's Performing Arts Center has been showing free family-friendly movies to the public on their house screen, which is one of the largest in New York State.

This weekend, The Goonies will run at 4PM on Sunday, March 15th.  The Main Street and Pearl Steet doors will be open at 3PM, making it easy for families to head over to the Theatre District after the Saint Patrick's Day Parade on Delaware Avenue. The Goonies chronicles the story of a group of kids who embark on an adventure after finding a treasure map, all to help try and save their neighborhood from being built over and replaced with a golf course.

Tickets for the movies are free and available to the public now at Wegmans' Customer Service Desks and at Shea's Box Office (open Monday-Friday,
10AM-5PM and Saturday 10AM-2PM).

Other movies being featured at Shea's Free Family Film Series this season are Back to the Future (
2PM on Sunday, April 5th) and The Princess Bride (2PM on Sunday, May 3rd).

Parental warning re: Goonies

There is a LOT of swearing in the first 10 minutes of the film. Mostly S-bombs as I recall. My wife rented Goonies last year to watch with our kids. We only remembered the fun parts and forgot the film earned its PG-13 rating in part due to the excessive swearing. Probably fine for older kids but, if you don't want younger kids to hear swearing, then it may not be for your family. IMHO.

dlotempio-The Goonies is rated PG, not PG-13. It is also the greatest film of all time. Somehow kids are raised just fine everyday without your assistance.

"hey ma, I'm beginning to like this kid."

I am so pumped to be able to see one of my favorite childhood movies on the big screen at sheas this sunday.

@dlotempio, I understand your point, but I grew up in the 80's, and Goonies is one of my all time favorite movies. I first saw this film when I was very young, and I turned out just fine. My parents were strict with what I watched, but understood that good parenting could overcome any swear word I heard. I also played lots of video games and am not violent at all ;)

There isn't anything in Goonies that kids can't see/hear on normal television today. There is, however, a great story about a group of friends going on the adventure of their lives.

I think somewhere along this very short comment thread that I acquired a reputation for "raising other people's kids" or that I'm implying a movie with swearing would irrepairably harm children. If I were to apply the same insight, I might assume that my fellow posters feel children should be exposed to swearing and foul language all the time. I really don't believe that. You watched the film as a youth, perhaps several times, enjoyed it, and turned out fine. That's great and I believe you.

I can live with occassional foul utterances in a movie and use it as a lesson in using language for my children, but I and my wife were unprepared for the extended profanity laced opening sequence. I've met other parents who've had the same experience. They thought the movie would be a simple movie experience for their family and instead it became an unforseen discussion on the role and appropriateness of swearing. I felt it would be reasonable to give other parents a heads up.

Swearing happens all the time in real life. I don't expect my children to NEVER hear it. I'm prepared to discuss the matter with them. BUT when I read them a book or show them a movie, I like to KNOW BEFOREHAND the content so I can be prepared to talk with them about it. Hence my heads up.

It is too bad that max and stephen feel parents shouldn't care or worry about what their children read and view. I'll be sure to tell my children - "don't worry, you'll turn out fine" - the next time I watch DAWN OF THE DEAD, which I enjoyed by the way. Hopefully my children will enjoy the flesh-eating, swearing, sex, violence and uplifting ending as well.

Mea culpa - you are correct that Goonies was PG. It pre-dated the PG-13 rating. I had read some reviewers suggest it would fit the pg-13 rating. Again, Mea Culpa.

Well, as a parent of three whose oldest is five, I appreciate the heads up on the swearing. In a few years I'll be more relaxed about language, but this young I want things a little more filtered. I never saw this movie. Everyone's glowing recollection of it tells me we'll want to see it sometime, but for right now I won't be tempted to take the five or three year olds to it. Thanks.
