A Great Day To Be Green

A Great Day To Be Green
This year, for the first time, I made it to both the Saturday's Old Neighborhood and Sunday's Delaware Avenue St. Patrick's Day parades. BRO's Rimas Musteikis is working up a post on Saturday's parade in the Old First Ward, so I figured that I would give a quick summation of what I saw earlier today on Delaware Avenue. It's funny... for the first time ever I had a hard time getting curbside to catch the action. The street was mobbed. The weather was magnificent and the crowd showed up in droves. I even got to the parade a bit early to stake out a spot, but it was too late so I hopped up on a cement wall at the corner of Delaware and North Streets to observe.

Other than the stellar crowd-observing opportunities and the ever-present blue skies that blanketed the festivities, I noticed many other welcoming sights. It was good to see that Buffalo Homecoming group made a showing this year for the first time. The Queen City Roller Girls always get the crowd cheering, especially since it appeared to be an excellent turnout for the league. The Keystone Cops are probably my favorite group to watch... this year the vehicles were crazier than ever. I also got a kick out of the kids (and parents) in the Buffalo Shamrocks Hockey Club, especially when they 'Throw Down'. I was sorry to see that one of the classic cars broke down, but in true 'green' Buffalo fashion, members of the parade pushed it all the way to the end... talk about spirit.

I spoke to Buffalo Police Chief Donna Berry who told me that she had never seen anything like the turnout for today's parade. There was a sea of people as far as the eye could see. What a great way to kick off spring and the upcoming event season. I heard Senator Schumer shout out to the crowd that he had left overcast and rainy NYC earlier in the morning, and was thrilled to find it sunny and warm in Buffalo. I'd have to agree - I don't think I've ever seen such a perfect day for the parade... ever!

Mid-summer weather like this reminds me of parades I have seen out west and in New York City. No snow, no rain, it is more like a Memorial Day parade today then a Thanksgiving Day parade. Of course the Rince Na Tiarna Irish dancers marched as well as d... Read More

Queenseyes, indeed a great weekend in Buffalo. I got to catch the tail end of the parade in the Old First Ward, got some heavenly goodies at Mazurek's, then headed over to the Valley for the hooley and the best corned beef sandwich I've ever had. I also discovered the Helen Beaman Center‏ at the corner of Elk & Smith, which has a nicely curated and growing collection of materials related to Old First Ward & Valley heritage -- and is run by a super-nice group of volunteers. They even have copies of Buffalo Rising in plastic sleeves in binders as part of their collection!

I also got to chat with the folks who used to run Danny Boy's: http://www.buffalorising.com/2009/02/dont-pick-on-the-little-guy-ii--can-you-save-the-first-wards-most-unique-cottage.html

and: http://www.buffalorising.com/2009/03/first-ward-house-iii--a-former-storefront-building.html

and are planning to reopen it this summer as Johnny Robin's. Everywhere I went people were wearing "Kearns for Buffalo" stickers -- has campaign season begun--?

A great weekend to be in Buffalo with (real) red hair!

Yes it was a nice day but why were so many obvious under age kids allowed to drink themselves into a stupor in public and piss all over the place? Isn't there an open container law they use to harass the homeless panhandlers but yet it's ok on these "special" ocassions? Allentown is trashed and guess who gets to pay to clean it up? Maybe next year Williamsville can host this event.

I agree, you would figure with the massive amounts of overtime paid to "Buffalo's Finest" we would see some control in the crowd. Instead I saw 15 - 18 year old kids puking in garbage cans and peeing in the alleys. Trash left strewn throughout the street, etc, etc, etc. I guess this gives us an opportunity to spend more money on overtime for street and sanitation workers, police officers, and fire personnel so that a "good time can be had by all". Maybe Mickey Kearns would like to come back and pick up the hundreds of buttons, flyers, and bumper stickers that were left along the parade route by his campaign staff. Or maybe he is just waiting for the leprechauns and elves to pick them up for him. Ah, the luck o' the irish, right Mickey?

Dear old whiney hippies - if you don't like the way Buffalo celebrates the ending of winter, please find your way down to the retirement communities of Florida and get your shuffle board game on. It's your crappy attitude that has kept our poor self image alive.

Great job Buffalo, there is no other place I would have wanted to be today!

Kearns and other politicians should order their patronage-seeking volunteers to pick up the trashed campaign material after the parade.

lighten up and let them have some fun.

enough money was pumped into the economy today to offset any cleanup cost.

Parades can be fun, but they don't pump money into the local economy compared to what would be pumped anyway.

They just pump some of it into different businesses than it otherwise would've soon pumped.

i disagree... of course all money is going to be pumped into the economy at some point but who's to say most of what was spent in downtown and allentown today would have ended up there anyways?

Thousands of people came downtown today. For some it'll be their only visit for a while. For more it'll be their only visit to whatever bar or restaurant they happened to goto.

Loads of money was spent today at businesses who eagerly await the day. Staffing levels were at their highs. Government gets its cut from taxes. Businesses get a needed infusion on the back of 2 notoriously slow months. Alot of bartenders and servers are really happy today.

Did the parade generate any new money? Of course not, it's not the fed. Did it encourage regional money to be spent locally? Yep. Are the costs incured by the city for the sake of its businesses worth it? Absolutely.

I understand what you mean for owners and servers in certain bars and restaurants, but I don't consider $$$ pumped downtown or Allentown to be of greater benefit to the local economy than if it was pumped later this week in South Buffalo (for example) or where ever the attendees would have otherwise spent it soon - other parts of Buffalo or even the burbs. I'm a regionalist in that way.

I didn't imply the costs incurred by the city govt aren't worth it. The parade is fine just as it happened. It's popular with a lot of people and a quality of life thing to them.

About policing, if they prevent or control violence as apparently they did, that's about all that can be reasonably expected. There's no realistic way to have much control over disorderly conduct kinds of things with that much people and beer. As Sambo suggests, maybe people who want a more family friendly parade should go the the other one instead.

It probably wouldn't be sensible to make a lot of arrests for non-violent drunken stuff, urinating, puking, open containers, etc. - except in very extreme cases.

I'm sure some arrests were made but there's just too much of it concentrated at that event to make a big dent. The time it would take to arrest offenders and bring them to Holding Center would subtract from security to prevent violence. Much harder to police than a Bills game for example. People who are really bothered by what happens at the parade every year shouldn't attend.

I understand that the Delaware Ave. parade can be a hassle, so does anyone that has lived in Buffalo to see one or two of them. The two parades this weekend are some of the events that make Buffalo great. You were once underage and acting like a fool, we all were. It's no surprise, this is an annual event. Next year go to the First Ward parade, it's not as big of a hassle and the drunk suburban teens don't show up. If you don't want to see drunk kids and garbage after a big out door gathering then don't go. Why do people act shocked and outraged at something that we know goes on and has been for years. The political shots make it sound even more ridiculous. Notice most of the people there with green faces and green wigs are Polish anyway.

I don't know why people complain about the mess, Allentown is usually fithy on a daily basis anyway.

Winter is a little rough, but during the summer volunteers clean up Allentown everyday. I live in Allentown and pick up garbage on a regular basis...

It is exactly your mentality that makes people feel its ok to just drop their beer bottle/cup/jim's bag/etc. right where they stand instead of walking the 20 feet to a garbage can.

LOL, My mentality? My statement was that Allen Street on a REGULAR basis, all summer/spring/fall/winter long is pretty filthy. How on earth does that make people not use garbage cans? Also, "volunteers" do not clean up Allentown "everyday". If so, where the hell are they and who are they?

In the summer there are people picking up trash every morning in Allentown. I live on Allen street and see them every morning in the summer with those claw grabber things picking up trash. I've always assumed they're volunteers with the Allentown Association, maybe they're not?

I've also seen groups who I believe are with some sort of community service group, or urban youth group(?) cleaning up as well.

Every morning it gets clean. Every night people trash it, 'cause hey it's just Allentown, it's filthy anyway...

First time I missed it in quite a long time. Maybe ever, and it seems like a bad one to miss. Ahh well. There is always next year assuming people don't find a way to ruin what is one of the best events that consistently brings new people into the city, many maybe for the first time.

The open container law is a joke to begin with. Now if they get behind the wheel.. the police should be out in full force.

Are people on this site really complaining that there were open containers, under age drinking, and public urination at a St. Patricks day parade? I honestly can't believe there are people that stupid that they are "Shocked" when something so obvious happens. I bet you are the same people who go to a movie theater and are shocked when they have to pay $5 for candy, or when the sun comes up in the morning. Lighten up! I'll check back in a few weeks when these same people trash Dyngus Day festivities.
