70 and Counting...

70 and Counting...
The City has stepped up and installed a series of urban bike racks - 38 in total. The racks, branded with the signature Blue Bike emblem, have been installed in commercial districts such as Hertel and Allen. Combined with the local Rusty Chain effort that netted some 30 rings, that's somewhere around 70 in total. Quite a change from last summer when we were in jeopardy of losing parking meter poles all over the city.

What's even better is that Justin Booth of Go! Buffalo tells me that more racks on the way. The Rusty Chain fundraiser last week netted another couple of grand to add to the pot, and Flying Bison continues to crank out barrels of Rusty Chain beer. According to Tim Herzog at Flying Bison, Try-It Distributing is now handling the account, which means that the beer will not only stay in production, the distribution can now be taken to an even wider area. And there's even more good news for cyclists. Justin has just informed me that there's a bigger push underway from The City and Go! Buffalo:

"Green Options Buffalo, in partnership with the City of Buffalo, has secured $100,000 for the Commercial District Bicycle Parking Program. That will allow approximately another 178 bike racks to be manufactured and installed."

The good news just keeps coming. It would be nice to see a bigger push from the private sector to join the cause. When it comes to buying into the idea of allowing employees to lock their bikes up at work, many companies just don't get it. They don't get the environmental and health benefits, and they don't see that a younger generation of workers is looking for signs that the workplace is coming around to seeing a different type of green.

Earlier this year, we let you know about 70 bike racks being installed in our city.  Now, the sidewalk right in front of Sweetness 7 Cafe on Grant and Lafeyette is home to the first of 100 new similar bike racks that will be inserted througho... Read More

Great news. I noticed a few rings and a rack or two being installed on Hertel last week. Good stuff. Regarding 100k secured for 178 new racks, thats great news as well, however does that mean each of the racks are manufactured and sold for 560 dollars each?

all this time i thought assaroni was marshawns middle name.bike racks are a great plan, i don't think having them is going to increase ridership much. people don't need a place to lock a bike they need a safer way to ride! there are not nearly enough streets with bike lanes. that might make more people think of riding again. some drivers in this city suck when it comes to giving riders any respect.i gave up my motorcycle for that reason. educate drivers and make more bike lanes, that's what's needed!!! seeing the racks being put out there is a fine beginning to help increase bike use.

I don't think Buffalo Rising has enough articles plugging Rusty Chain beer. Look at how little it's mentioned on the site ...

BR should also publish more about what's going on in the Elmwood Village area.

Sorry Dan, you can skip over the posts when you see them because bike season is upon us and there will surely be more.

They look really good! I will definitely use them often... Hope there is one in front of Sterling Place, Dashes and Hertel Market. Always seem to be bikes and people looking for spots in front of these establishments.

I felt bad one day when I apparently took the locking spot of an employee. Also glad that rusty chain is doing so well. It is a good beer and hopefully can bring about good things for both Flying Bison and Bike Culture in Buffalo.

Build it and they will come.

I concur, Dashes could certainly use one, so i dont have to use the light pole any longer, Sterling as well, although I usually just walk the 2 blocks, but perhaps one day i will be too lazy to walk all that way and will ride my bike if their is a rack out front.

Queenseyes, do you know of any plans for bike racks on Seneca--? I was in So Bo Saturday, and I noticed the new street light posts they're putting in are cast stone with a rough aggregate surface -- which could look banged up after having a few chains or u-locks on it -- so I worry that they might try to discourage bikes from locking up on them.

Any Rusty Chain action in So Bo -- I was at Blackthorn, and they didn't have it on their list -- just curious.

We are happy to have one outside of Caz Coffee Cafe in South Buffalo. There is also one installed in front of the Chique Boutique right down the street from us on Abbott Road. I hope to see more Blue Bike racks and more bikes on the streets of South Buffalo in the near future.

RaChaCha: Rusty Chain is currently on tap at Charlie O'Briens 865 Elk Street in So Bo

Chris/Caz, outstanding. Saturday was my first opportunity to check out So Bo -- we were there after Buffalo Tours docent training, and after Blackthorn I rode with a group that was taking a look around to scout out the South Buffalo tour which BT will offer this year. I loved it, and felt like I was in a village rather than in the state's second largest city. Looking forward to getting back again soon.

Good news on the racks... now we just need someone to paint some bike lanes onto the streets.

It is nice to see South Buffalo get some respect from the comments. The area is really starting to come back to life and i would love to see some more bike racks along Seneca/Abbott.

I am shocked at the individual price of $560. However, if we are going to install them lets put them where they are most needed. Is there an official application so specific locations can be requested?

They're cool looking but the way they screw into the base doesn't look very secure. Why are they not in poured concrete?

I agree. They are going to take a beating and one of the first signs of shenanigans are bolts that mysteriously disappear. We'll all have to keep a sharp eye out for this and notify the city as soon as the bolts come off. Some serious welds might forestall the inevitable...

obesity, it isn't "really big news", as you so sarcastically put it, but it is a small gesture of a city trying to do the little things to make itself more functional and beautiful....so suck it fatso.

A couple of clarifying points on the bicycle racks...

First, while the cost per rack seams high it was the lowest bid which includes fabrication and installation. Each rack is not only powder-coated but I believe zinc coated as well to prevent rust and longevity.

Cementing into the ground was considered but adds to the cost and if per say one is damaged, much harder to replace and remove.

The bolts to the ground while appear to be easy to remove have a special adhesive that prevents them from being tampered with.

Lastly, all locations are spots that have been requested by the community and are trying to be filled on a first come first serve basis. That being said, requests are continually being taken and can be placed here: http://www.city-buffalo.com/applications/bikestandreq/default.aspx
