Gelato Ji Jumps For Grant

Gelato Ji Jumps For Grant
Grant Street is getting a gelato joint. And guess where it's going? Almost directly across the street from Sweet_ness 7 Café. Grant Street's cornerstone café certainly did not waste time attracting another West Side believer. This time it's David Simpson who is planting a commercial flag near the corner of Grant and Lafayette. "The new energy and development attracted me to the street," Dave told me. "Combined with the history of the neighborhood, we knew that we wanted to be a part of the street's growth. Guercio's Market is a great draw as well - the business has been around for 30 years. I buy half of my products from Guercio's. I can grab the supplies as I need them since they will be located just a few doors away.

"When I told the Sam Guercio that I was moving into the building, his eyes lit up. I think that he was rather astounded. This move from the Five Corner project (a bakery is moving in to fill the vacancy) will help to enhance our relationship with the market. We were looking for a location where more businesses were opening. The space that we're moving into is about 500 sq.' (photo - center). Our building was a flower retail shop at one point.  The attached greenhouse (photo - lower left) is also very interesting... I can't wait to see what happens with it. Other buildings on our block offer even more potential. This is very fortunate situation for us.

"The principal owner of Gelato Ji, Richard Buccleu, and I are very excited about the move. The properties on the street are less expensive, while offering a great ethnic diversity. I don't care who you are... you can come in to the shop and we'll serve you gelato. We have learned what sort of gelato and ice cream the different ethnic groups like. This is also where we will make the gelato for fifteen local restaurants like Tabree, Kuni's, 31 Club, Trattoria Aroma, Shadow Lounge, San Marco, SeaBar, and La Dolce Vita to name a few. The list is growing. We're trying to be open by April 1st. The building is in pretty rough shape."

Earlier today I stopped into Mum's and Daisy's to pick up some flowers. That was just after I grabbed a cup of coffee at S7. It might be a small concentration of businesses, but the street's rebound has got to start somewhere. I still can't believe that so much has happened in what seems like such a short period of time. Now it's time to take on some of the problematic property owners on the street who continue to show no signs of fixing up their properties. The time is now to jump onboard with Grant Street growth!

Over the last couple of years I've been hearing rumors surrounding one of the more unusual structures on Grant Street. It's an old greenhouse, and it had been sitting vacant for quite some time. Because it's so unusual to see a greenhouse on a commerci... Read More

My guess is that as soon as the 8 story project for Elmwood and Forest is completed, then this will mark the shift of Buffalo State students away from Elmwood toward Grant.

This 8 story development is also going to drastically change the property values on Elmwood across the street and those increased property values are going to attract different business types.

This is going to be the first of a long line of shifts from Elmwood to Grant making Grant a true college street.

Sadly, looking at Buffalo State, they could take a bold partnership in student life on Grant moving non-academic services to Grant, dormatories, stadiums, bookstores, etc but such bold competent leadership will NEVER be exhibited by HOWARD!

Great story. My bro used to live on Lafayette right by Grant and I have to say this neighborhood is very underated. I think in addition to businesses being priced out of Elmwood, many residents have been and will continue to look at housing in the Grant-Richmond area as they are much more afordable. Like QC Id love to see Buff State get more involved with west side redevelopment.

Cue defeatist posters who will no doubt say that we shouldnt get excited about incremental growth like a gelato shop on Grant. We should instead spend our time moping about the lack of manufacturing, crime, lack of demolitions and such.

Hey it's all good, no more bashing the little mom and pop shops, I get it...they matter.

Caring about how to meaningfully effect the future should not be considered moping. Spotlighting the, and the emergence of every new coffee or flower shop should not be considered a marker of success either.

We'll all meet in the middle, it's the only way.

Great news. It only takes one person to set off a chain reaction. Sweetness 7 Café may have been that first person

I just represented two young couples with children in the purchase of their homes next door to one another on Greenwood Place. I'm sure they will be thrilled to hear this news! The fact that they could walk to the grocer and walk to get a cup of coffee in the morning had a big impact on their decision to buy here. It didn't hurt that they were able to purchase a very nice home, with great woodwork; a backyard and a two car garage for less than the price of a new car, leaving money left over for upgrades. The neighborhood is ripe for investment and these business owners, established residents and new residents deserve a lot of credit for leading the way. Good job!

Congrats. The housing prices in this area are so low that much of the "risk" of buying in this neighborhood is eliminated. Ive been looking for a place in N Buffalo but recently Ive been giving the Lafayette-Grant area a serious look. Why not as you can get a substantial home for about half of what you would pay off Hertel and 1/4 of what you would pay off Elmwood. Those of you like myself who want to buy a home but dont have the means for a 200k fixer-upper in the EV ought to shop around here. And dont just do it for sweetness7 or gelato g. This area was nice long before these places opened.
