One man has overcome tremendous obstacles to bring such different musical groups and genres together. Van Taylor. I asked Van what his goals were: "To bring together the musical community to work together to help all people in need with their talents,  but to also help our own organization survive in order to support ventures such as this fundraiser. Lastly, to encourage the next generation of musicians and singers to get involved within their communities. The contest  essay will hopefully get young people thinking about helping their community with their talents of which they may do the same in the future." Van's model is: " To care about the least of us is to care about all of us."

The Music Student Scholarship Contest winner will get $500 to be spent in a musical way. Students in grades 9 thru 12 are eligible. The contest runs from February 5-25 2009. The mission is to encourage the next generation of musicians, singers and songwriters to support their communities. Music students must write an essay on one of these topics:

How does music enrich my community?
My dream in music is to be...
What can I do to make a difference with my talent?
What I need at this moment to help my musical career?

This from Rick Matthews, president of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame :  "We are especially happy to have the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra host this wonderful collaboration, especially with all of our musicians and orchestra from Buffalo. The levels of talent with all of the people involved is quite impressive. Plus all of the music from different backgrounds blending together while maintaining its own individuality is astounding.  I would like to encourage all of Western New York and Southern Ontario to experience this historic moment."

Finally, a couple of pictures of the tremendously successful Buffalo Music Hall of Fame benefit at the Lafayette Tap Room this past December 28 2008. Gretchen Schulz (class of 2008) and brother Dave Schulz (class of 2008):
