Last Weekend for Ujima’s “The Visit”

30 years ago, Lorna Hill opened a theatre in downtown Buffalo. The first play performed was a piece written by her called "Anansi the Spider and the Children's Bill of Rights".  Since then Ujima has put on countless plays, musicals and performances, allowing countless actors, crewmembers and the like to experience firsthand what goes into a performance. Ujima is known for its diverse, thoughtful and often provocative shows.

Nestled in Elmwood Village Ujima's theatre is intimate and comfortable. It is a non-profit theatre, and shows are produced by the company. Every company member, every volunteer, every actor participates in all aspects of a production. It is not uncommon to perform, help paint sets and make costumes for a single show. Through this collaborative

Buffalo: Nationally Known for its Lush, Green Gardens

With chilly temperatures and summer seeming forever away, it was refreshing to see a dozen lush, green Buffalo gardens grace more than 35 pages in Great Backyards magazine's newest issue.  The issue has already caught quite a bit of attention; it was sold out in two different stores I ventured to.

Great Plug For Buffalo On MSNBC
A friend of mine sent me this link to MSNBC's Today show featuring a Buffalo property for sale for $219,000. The House Hunting report showcased a classic Colonial and talked about the outstanding community and the city's excellent proximity to Niagara Falls (I wish they had also mentioned Toronto).

The downfall of the city during the '70's and '80's was mentioned, but at the same time the city's 'recent' economic upswing was also touched upon. Real estate expert Barbara Corcoran and MSNBC's Al Roker did justice

Major Grant to “Make a Lot of Noise and Save a Lot of Buildings”

"When you look at what we've accomplished in just four months, it's pretty incredible."  There's no disputing that recent assessment by Henry McCartney, Interim Executive Director of Preservation Buffalo-Niagara.  Formed last year, Preservation Buffalo-Niagara was the culmination of nearly a year of effort toward consolidation and

The Cooperage: From Dream To Reality

I believe that The Cooperage stabilization project and ultimate loft conversion plan is one of the most exciting advances taking place in the city. The order of magnitude regarding this Civil War-era complex has yet to sink in to the collective Buffalo psyche. Developer Ben Obletz once proved that people would take a chance living in an area of the city that was considered a final frontier. He converted the Elk Terminal building into a series of lofts that continue to thrive to this day. Now Clint Brown has been handed the reins and his dream of rescuing and rehabbing the historic former E&B

Going for the Green at Canal Side

By Dave Majewski

The following is an abbreviated version of a comment letter submitted to the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation at the Canal Side environmental review scoping session Wednesday evening.  Dave is a horticulturalist, contractor and an urban sustainability and low-impact development (LID) consultant.  He owns Premium Landscape Services.

My concern is for preservation of our natural heritage - Lake Erie, Buffalo River...i.e. water - through total sustainability,

Offbeat Cinema Hosts Science Fiction Film Festival
I love Offbeat Cinema. The characters are a ton of fun and the movies are a complete riot. I am constantly amazed at the b-movie finds that hosts Maxwell Truth, Bird and Zelda continue to dig up. I just heard that the b-eatnik team is putting together a March science fiction film series, which will be hosted at the Museum of Science. As an added b-onus, the show's writer and co-producer, James Gillan, will be present to answer some of the crazy questions that pop up whenever a sci-fi, lowbrow, b-caliber flick is shown. He will also shed some light on the nature of the films and their tie-ins with

St. Margaret’s Demolition

By Sean Brodfuehrer

While walking home from the bus stop today, I was saddened to see the cloister of St Margret's Church was being torn down. St. Margret's is located on Hertel Avenue between Saranac and North Park Avenues in the North Park neighborhood. The element in question stood on the southern edge of the property and runs east-west along Saranac Avenue.
