January BRM on the Street

January BRM on the Street
Our newest issue is out and can be found around town in all of the usual places.  Look for articles about the Erie County Sheriff's Mounted Unit, the Traveling Barber, Artists in Buffalo (Cynnie Gaasch and the Still Film Photographers of Greater Buffalo @ Locust Street), Irish Classical Theatre and more.

There's an article about the Todd Eberwine Band making a trip to Memphis for a Blues Festival in February, sponsored by the Blues Society of Western New York, and a candid interview with Congressman Brian Higgins.

In addition to a few fine hours spent in Ristorante Lombardo, you'll also find a review of Fast Frank's in University Heights and a Cocktail of the Month piece with a drink recipe from the Thirsty Buffalo.

Sure to tweak some reader thought is a piece done by Buffalo State College student, Danielle Hanson, about a fellow student who is living way off campus at the Adam's Mark Hotel due to campus overcrowding. With dire economic issues and private college applications down for the 2009-2010 school year, this state college dilemma is sure to grow.  Will Rock Harbor Village be the well timed panacea?

You'll find an article by ex-pat John Howell who discusses what it means to be a Buffalonian, in love with Buffalo from afar.

Also included is the monthly BRM Q&A with Associate Director of Urban Design for the University of Buffalo Master Plan Bradshaw Hovey, Ph.D.  In typical Q&A fashion, this is meant to be a light piece, introducing the subject to our readership at large through predesigned and somewhat whimsical questions - nothing more.  We leave the harder questions for breaking news stories, with a promise that as soon as people around town are willing/able to talk about the bigger picture, we'll let you know what they have to say.

Elena, I think we all understand the Q&A are meant to be light pieces, but whimsy doesn't seem be the result. Maybe the questions need tweaking in order to achieve your intended goal.

As far as including Mr. Howell in print, well, that's just wrong only because his writing is terribly incoherent for a self-described author. He's a charlatan.

With that said, I still think all of you folks are doing a good job providing an alternative source of positive information about Buffalo and I appreciate your efforts and those of almost everyone else who contributes to BRO. This ex-pat says thank you.

Thanks, Paul. We do our best. Give Howell another chance. My friend Mitch, expat, Jew and senior editor of a national publication actually liked the piece (though he did question the middle name). But opinion does drive the conversation here, and I feel like Howell's is no less important a perspective than any of the comments.

That being said, I may rethink putting the Q&A on the website; maybe it's best left for those quiet times when one is thumbing through the hard copy.

I invite all sorts of perspectives here, and with the possible exception of those who would make us look like purveyors of hatred - of anyone - which is the exact opposite of what we stand for, I appreciate all perspectives.

Again, thank you for weighing in and being invested. Right now, it's a sunny, cool and crisp, windless day in Buffalo, and I aim to get out into it.

Elena,

Has BRO ever considered making available a pdf file download of the monthly magazine on the site like Artvoice and Business First do? It would be very helpful and useful to BRO's out-of-town readers.

John,

That may be in the offing, and I suppose it would be a pleasure to out-of-towners to get the magazine in full, rather than dribs and drabs. The one thing it wouldn't allow is comment on each and every story. If we put the pdf up on the site and then posted individual stories, some wouldn't be happy that they had to sift through a story for the third time (print, pdf and post), but it's worth an office discussion.

Thanks,
E

I really enjoyed the article about the foster kids and the Sheriffs mounted unit. I also like the layout and overall style of the magazine.
