Griffis Sculpture Goes Up at Rigidized

Griffis Sculpture Goes Up at Rigidized
The first large section of Larry Griffis III's Energy Weave sculpture went up on the side of Rigidized Metals Corporation's recently completed 20,000 sq. ft. building today.

Griffis said this sculptor's dream project is "one of the most exciting projects I've ever been involved with."  At 80 feet in length and soaring 40 feet high, it's also one of the largest.  We caught up with Rigidized CEO Rick Smith in Milo's Diner earlier this week, and he was pretty excited himself at the prospect of the installation.

Smith has great affinity for Buffalo and even more civic pride where the 1st Ward is concerned.  "We don't have much art down here...and Larry and I were keen to change that.  We wanted to build something special, something new, something to take a little pride in."

Considering the sculpture is representative of the what Griffis and Smith are each best known for -  sculpture and steel, respectively - they certainly can take pride in the completed work.

Designed to catch sunlight that will give it virtual movement, Energy Weave will be easily seen from Route 5. Depending on weather and other factors, the sculpture should be installed in its entirety within the week.  See here for a map if you'd like to drive down and take a closer look.

With all the empty land within city limits, there is room for a real sculpture park in Buffalo.

what an odd spot for a steel sculpture, next to a corrugated steel building in the middle of nowhere...I agree, plenty of room for a park for this.

Onestarmartin, I'm not discounting this installation at all. I think it's great that a local business is installing art on the premises. Many businesses across the country used to exhibit art on their premises, but this occurs now with less frequency.

Buffalo is the perfect place for a sculpture park. Before anyone suggests Buffalo's poverty, I would mention the Odette Sculpture Park in Windsor, Ontario (hardly a prosperous town), that is a small success on Windsor's waterfront and a popular place in the summer months.

What a great idea! Beautiful to look at and fits in so well the products Rick manufactures and his vision for the future. Wind and waves, Rick is one of the best promoters of renewable energy that I know.

The Rock Harbor Blue Initiative is a vision for the Scajaquada Creek Trail corridor that includes development of a sculpture park along the Scajaquada Creek Trail. This trail links the Museum district to Rock Harbor and the Niagara waterfront. Supportors of this linear sculpture park have been in active collaboration with Buffalo MicroParks and Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and have just recently presented the idea to Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy who, by the way, have secured Niagara Greenway funds for Scajaquada Creek Trail restoration and enhancements.
