Comment of the Day: Calling Glamour Shots

Comment of the Day: Calling Glamour Shots

National publications frequently use crummy, dated photos of Buffalo.  This has been a pet peeve in these parts for a while, yet time and time again a drab and disappointing photo turns up.  Tahooter's comment on the Forbes housing article brings up the issue again:

tacking on to what quesaisje2 said, the photos of Buffalo in media seem oftentimes dreary--from wgrz.com banner head to this Forbes shot. How about the better perspective from Canada or marina with all the major bldgs and steeples included? I don't know from where stock photos are pulled, but that folder needs refreshing! Otherwise, it might be better to have Little Rock take the hit :)

I'd wait to take an updated photo, of Downtown, after the courthouse, the condo building, and Avant is completed.

I wouldn't want anyones time wasted but having updated photos throughout all the additions mentioned before might be helpful.

The local media are equally guilty of this. They have never shown the skyline form any angle other than the same tired old Erie Basin Marina view.

Imagine-you can actually see the skyline from the north south and east too! What a concept!

Very true there are some great new perspectives developing downtown. We should get those out there. I don't know who the guy is but almost anything from Exposure Buffalo is striking and worth showing off a little more. I think his \ her detail to space, architecture and contrast are fantastic.

That isn't the best picture of the Buff but I went through all 25 and it wasn't as bad as some of the others. The Rochester pic had a house (renovated, but) with an old school satellite dish on the roof....

The lead pic for this posting is great though!

Views from within M Wile building show downtown from a very nice, unique perspective. Getting some nicer shots without window dirt would be nice. It puts the long downtown in a nice 30 degree from center line view.

BRO's recent article on different visual perspectives of downtown offers us an alternative to the same CVB or local news panoramas. I especially like the perspective of looking at downtown from the north.

A lot of great shots from ECB right here at BR.

Many of the stock photos in the Top 10/25/50/whatever articles show housing that is typical for the city featured in the slide. I guess there's little stock photography available depicting vernacular, uniquely Buffalo middle-class residential architecture.

This is one of my favorites from an amazing local photographer.

One of the perks of doing stories for Buffalo Rising is that I've managed to get shots from the top of the Electric Tower, Silo City, City Centre and Old County Hall. I treasure them along with the opportunity, and have even thought about having them blown up for exhibition somewhere. I do throw them up on the site whenever I get a chance.

I have an okay to go to the top of the Rich Creamery and shoot there, but I may wait for a balmier day with less wind.

Sometimes I don't know if it's the pictures or my memories behind them that strike me; the people who were with me and the conversations we had, along with the sense of death-defiance that comes with riding a belt story after story through holes in the floor of a grain elevator.

I'll take a cue from sonyactivism that the sense the images provoke is universal and not so much the backstory, and I'll try to share more.

Why is a comment the editor made the comment of the day?

Never-mind, my bad.

I've always been a huge fan of the photos of BR's multi-talented editor, and many of the other contributors.

I'd love to see a CEPA gallery exhibit featuring many of the great photos that have appeared on Buffalo Rising - a keg O'Rusty Chain at the opening reception.

send these pics to the AP for their backup files, much better than the ones we usually see!

What UTTER, UTTER nonsense. Buffalo via PR. Just like our national government for the last eight years. One could offer a thousand magnificent views of an under-appreciated city. So what? To calculate for the effect on Forbes? A ludicrous website, to begin with. The best of this; the worst of that; where to invest; where to retire; the best places for active people; the cities whose people have the whitest teeth... and on and on and on. My God! Does anyone in this country think for himself any more?

What do you think about this picture? http://flickr.com/photos/22976506@N05/3030260731/

I took it from Buffalo General Hospital

- also, thanks much for including two of my pics on BuffaloRisingOnline! I couldn't believe after years of being on this site, one day I see a random post and there - the first two pictures are indeed included from my Buffalonian4life flickr account! Thanks BR! ;) What a fun way to end the day.

Now, I absolutely agree that different views of downtown are essential to our city's aesthetic appearance while enhancing various views and opinions of our slowly but surely changing skyline.

My goal is to take as many unique skyline pictures of Buffalo as I can, and make sure that ones of the skyline, downtown, and beyond - enhance the reputation of Buffalo to many.

So please, enjoy the link and send your comments and thoughts on it, etc. (all of my photos are on my website BuffaloScenicPrints.com though for more views).

Time for a change in the way they show off our city. It's always a pain as it makes us Buffalonians cringe as some national or local channel displays a cold, eerie, and horrid depressed picture of our city.

Who can change this? Let's hold people in power accountable. After all, this is BUFFALO RISING, not WGRZ! ;-)

I didn't have my camera with me at the time but the view from the roof of the Larkin office building is great. A bit far from the downtown to get the buildings in scale, but a great view of the layout of the land in all four directions.

Ouch. Considering you're one of my very best sources for fantastic photos, it's a tragedy that you would be anywhere without your camera. If I haven't asked Howard Zemsky for one too many favors already, maybe we could get back up there.

I would love to be able to post pictures in our comments and see how many "views" a certain post on BRO is getting.
