The New Buffalo Rising - It's Alive!

The New Buffalo Rising - It’s Alive!
We're happy to launch the new buffalorising.com.

As we mentioned in previous posts, we built the new site to be faster and accommodate more content.  The design is a departure from the last version of Buffalo Rising and we hope our readers like it.

There are some technical things you should know as you start to use the site. First, as we've migrated to a new publishing platform, all the registered users will need to re-register to be able to comment and use the site's functionality.  If you have a username you've used for an extended period of time, we encourage you to re-register the name as quickly as possible if you'd like to maintain your identity.  We tried to avoid this re-registration but it wasn't possible.

Second, while almost all of the site's functionality is live and ready-to-go, there are some content areas that will be rolled out over time.  In particular, we're still working on the restaurant guide and we intend to roll that out within a few weeks.

Third, all of the content from the old site will be archived at archives.buffalorising.com and will still be viewable.  You'll still be able to find this content through our search function as well as through Google searches.

We hope you like the new site and we look forward to hearing your feedback.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Small problem: it doesn't post my login name at the top right, even when I'm logged in. FYI.

I miss the user posts on the front page. I often won't read a story until I see some of the responses to it.

Dewag - username shows up top right next to logout / my account. It's above the username/password boxes on my screen. It's subtle, but it's there.

Also, the most recent comments (which i think you're talking about) are on the right hand side of the page about midway down.

I was sort of hoping we would no longer have the odd practice of using the same lead stories for 2 or 3 "channels". It used to be that Front Page and City were the same, making one wonder why the tabs. But, other than that, this is clean and fresh and beautiful to read. Nice job. Congratulations.

I totally agree and I am so happy see that art and leisure aren't a category. I think letting the comments just show in the conversation will ultimately be much more productive.

actually i think they just did that for the article on the launch of the new site

A few things. Great job on the new layout. The website and login time is much improved! Are the old article going to be posted on the new website? A suggestion, when comments are posted, the most current one should be on top of the posts.

Cool, I dig it. It loads faster, and logging in doesn't take 10 minutes and a browser restart. We'll see if the comment posting has improved too. Stylistically I might suggest a little bit of color differentiation for the sidebars, and a little clearer comment list formatting. But I know websites are always a work in progress :)

looks good, but it works better too, that's the important part

The new site deleted my old account? Has this happened to anyone else?

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

scratch that...should have read the entire article haha. Did they get rid of the 5 star ratings?

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

The comment section will evolve a bit. Comment ratings and styles are still being considered.

You should change the spacing between comments. In a long list of comments it's easy to confuse which comment goes with which poster...the comment above their name, or the comment below? Or make that shaded bar, which I just saw as I was typing this, more obvious.

For some reason I can't register using a Verizon email address. Gmail registration brings an account verification email right away.

Did you check your spam folder? I have a yahoo email account and I found mine in there after the second time I attempted to register.

Yes, I checked there. Nothing. Strange that I was able to reset the password for my non-existant account, and they sent an email confirming, but I didn't get that either. I sent an email to BR detailing my issue, but haven't heard back. Possibly due to it being the weekend, holidays, and stormy.

well except that I didn't get my screen name again it seems good.

The most useful function of the old site was the "recent comments" bar. Placing it more prominently (and including more than 3 comments) would be good.

I love the weekly poll about Coach Jauron - I bet there will be lots of votes starting in about an hour.

I really wanted the "gausted" name

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Nice job. A few requests:

Metropolis is right-make it as easy as possible to comment. Hide the log in after I log in. I know I'm logged in. I don't want to ever do it again. At least, make it so when I click the login textbox, it clears and doesn't make me highlight the "User Name"--that's just bad usability.

When people sign up, tell them that a valid email address is required and that they will be receiving a confirmation email. Many people put in bogus addresses because they don't want spam, only to find out they can't register the name they chose.

The logo is a little blurry.

Icons are inconsistent and generally bad. The weekly poll one looks like a mutant bunny hand; what is that? Popular stories; is that a flag of some country?

The overall design is way better though.

The new design looks great. Somehow, it gives a more journalistic impression.

I liked the old version of the site and I like the new version as well. Every day I have a handful of sites I check, my "must see" sites, and BuffaloRising.com is on that list! Kudos to you for continuing to create a relevant, well-done site that helps make Buffalo an attractive and thought-provoking place to be. BuffaloRising.com doesn't just say, "Here's more depressing news about Buffalo" like some area publications :) Instead, BuffaloRising.com, like Barack Obama, asks its audience to dream big dreams and put hope back into the equation of life. I love that!
