Historic Building Gets New Facade

Historic Building Gets New Facade
The circa 1918 brick building at the corner of Swan and Michigan is a familiar site for those who frequent Bisons and Sabres games. Recently, workers have been meticulously removing the original brick façade. The goal is to maintain historic authenticity by replacing the deteriorated brick with new, color-correct brick. Owner James T. Sandoro wants to "try to preserve it to as close to original as we can."

The building was built in 1918 as a factory outlet for the Simon Pure Brewery. Soon after, pesky Prohibition got in the way and left the building and its industry sitting shuttered for 15 years until it finally opened in 1933. The 3,000 square foot, first-floor commercial space still flaunts the original tin ceiling, terrazzo floor and back bar. This could be transformed into offices or, as with the former tenant, used as a bar/restaurant.

Façade work should be completed by mid-Spring. To learn more about this historic building, please contact James T. Sandoro at 716.855.1931.

Be sure to listen to the vintage radio advertisements at the above Forgotten Buffalo link. "Simon Pure Beer, hits the spot when you're hot."

Nice article, Courtney! WCP, you have competition ;-)

With Dinosaur BBQ on the hunt for a Buffalo location

this might make a good one - close enough to downtown for the lunch crowd, and to the stadiums (as you note) for the sports crowd.

BTW, preservationists will be very interested in this project, given the building's history and the great pains the developers are taking to maintain historic authenticity. Just before the cutover to the new platform, BRO added a "Preservation" tag for articles - could this article be tagged, if those tags are still available on the new platform--?

I've been riding my bike past that building for about 5 years, and I've thought it would make a nice location for a bicycle shop/bar/restaurant, sort of like Chicago's Handle Bar (http://handlebarchicago.com/).

And what better place to serve Rusty Chain Beer (http://rustychainbeer.com)?
