My First Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing Experience
By Jenna Smith:
The Anchor Bar in Buffalo is credited with being the originator of Buffalo wings, which were first whipped up in 1964 by owner Teressa Lenz Bellisimo.
Although there are up to four different versions of their inception, Buffalo wings are popularly known as deep-friend chicken wings drenched in a vinegar-based cayenne pepper sauce. The official Anchor Bar account is that Teressa first served the wings to her son and some hungry friends as an impromptu late night snack. Now a classic meal in the city of Buffalo,

Relle (Organic) Salon moving into long vacant Elmwood storefront
The last shop to inhabit 616 Elmwood was Moda, which has since moved to a much larger location on Hertel. Since that time, the Elmwood location has sat empty - upwards of five years I believe. Fortunately the property was recently purchased by Sinatra and Company and is being fixed up in preparation for an organic salon. Buffalo Rising featured Relle Salon back in October when it moved into its original space at the corner of Elmwood and Auburn (/var/www/vhosts/buffalorising.com/httpdocs/index.html

E-Scrap 4 Camp
As e-waste gets more abundant, it's even more important to make sure that we are recycling on a regular basis. If you're into recycling and you also like to help the community, you're in luck. There will be e-waste drop-off sites at Buffalo ReUse (April 21) and Green Options Buffalo (April 14). On those days, Sunnking will be donating partial proceeds to Camp Good Days and Special Times. The event is being called E-Scrap 4 Camp because the electronics collected on those days will help to fund programming for Camp

Build a Bateau in Buffalo
Last month the Buffalo Maritime Center gave us the opportunity to build a harbor ferry. This month the group is moving forward with the building of of bateau. Each of these vessels has its own distinct Buffalo flavor, and now that the waterfront is alive with activity, these awesome water crafts can be seen once more navigating the Inner Harbor, the Buffalo River, etc. Thanks to the devoted boat builders at the Buffalo Maritime as well as myriad volunteers and waterfront enthusiasts, boats such as the bateau

Art Buff: Frank Cravotta
I've known artist Frank Cravotta for most of my life. As a matter of fact, Frank, who moved back to Buffalo from Baltimore in 2005, was the inspiration behind this series of artist interviews called 'Art Buff'. As much as I think I may know something about Frank's artwork, the wonderful thing about artists is the element of surprise. Did you know that Frank was the guy who painted the mural of the Niagara Square lion on Delaware Avenue? I didn't. The only reason I even found out was because I sat down with him to discuss his latest work of art called 'Wave 5' (lead image - commissioned

Help Buffalo-Niagara Win The Social Media Tourism Symposium
By Jessica Edwards:
What do Buffalonians love more than competition? More competition. There is a competition underway, and your vote will help to deliver a knock out punch to El Paso. Buffalo-Niagara is already leading in votes... let's keep it that way.
In the spirit of March Madness, there is a bracket-style contest for cities to duke it out by competing for votes. The city that advances through each round, and eventually is deemed the winner will become

Buffalo Bills: Andre Reed & Cornelius Bennett Among Those Snubbed By Hall of Fame
By Joshua Bauer (Football Nation):
For better or for worse, Buffalo is no longer the forgotten child in the NFL family. A joke... nay, a disappointment for far too long, the rest of the football-loving world had almost seemed to erase the Queen City and its Bills from their collective memories. Outside of the AFC East, many are often surprised when they see Buffalo's name on their schedule of games and can be heard remarking, "Wow, they

Trico Plant #1 @ a Crossroads
Submission by Eric Lander:
Last fall historic preservationists from around the country and beyond descended on Buffalo to marvel at our history and architectural treasures, and left with a new, more positive image of the city.  Did we not learn anything from their praises?  Our city's stock of historic buildings serves to create a sense of unique place not easily recreated.  Economic benefits include job creation, rising property values, stable tax base and an influx of cultural tourism.
Unfortunately,

The Tabernacle
It's been five years since Prish Moran purchased a couple of significant buildings at the corner of Lafayette and Grant Street (see story). One of those buildings was built as a tabernacle, and since its inception the building has played many a role in advancing the commercial cause of the neighborhood. Unfortunately, as the Grant Street area began to decline in years past, so did the use of the building. When I first met up with Prish five years ago I asked her what she had planned for the tabernacle building

PRESERVATION UPDATE: TRICO SAVES ITSELF!

In a bold move, TRICO Plant No. 1 decided to take matters into its own wiper blades and SAVE ITSELF! Last night TRICO called me on my preservation hotline and said that come morning it was going to leave Buffalo. So this morning I went downtown to bid adieu to a piece of Buffalo's future history. After a huge bear hug goodbye my friend "Trike" lifted itself off the ground with thousands of multi-colored balloons and a rocket booster engine just in case. What a sight! When asked why it needed a rocket booster engine TRICO said, "I am not sure if I

Historic Linwood Tour of Homes and a special B&B
There are few places in Buffalo that can hold a candle to Linwood Avenue when it comes to architecture. It's one of the most eclectic array of homes around, and those who live in them consider themselves lucky to be graced with living amongst such fine craftsmanship. Each year, on one special Sunday, visitors have the opportunity to walk into a number of these houses. The event is $20 per person ($25 day of), and all of the money raised during the event goes toward streetscape and neighborhood beautification projects.

PARADISE LUST: Searching for the Garden of Eden by Brook Wilensky-Lanford
Staff Review by Carol Ann Strahl:
A charming, century-spanning journey about the search for the Garden of Eden.          "Science vs. Religion" has become a major dichotomy in this society. The author introduces us to aplethora of churchmen, archaeologists, botanists, and educators, all with their agendas regarding this topic.
Some of the locations that have been espoused to be the Garden of Eden include West Florida, the North Pole, Chinese Turkestan, the State of Ohio,
